Urging all to take up the unfinished work for world peace

In April 2010, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon (1920-2012) bequeathed his last words for humankind

“I already have prepared the last words I will give to humankind. These words have been prepared based on my seven triumphs over life-or-death situations, including six periods of unjust imprisonment. I have left behind eight different volumes of books as the textbooks and teaching materials for humankind for all eternity.

“These include over 2,000 volumes of my published and unpublished speeches, Divine Principle, Cheon Seong Gyeong (천성경): Selections from the Speeches of True Parents, Pyeonghwa Shingyeong (the Peace Messages), the Family Pledge, True Families: Gateway to Heaven, Owner of Peace and Owner of Lineage and a comparative anthology titled World Scriptures.

“These textbooks are books that you will have to read and study even after you go to the spirit world. They are not just teachings that come from the mind of one human being: they are the textbooks and teaching materials that teach the heavenly way, which God has granted to His suffering children for their salvation.

“… last year, my memoirs, which contain an honest and candid account of my life, were published, titled As a Peace-Loving Global Citizen. …. I recommend it to you, believing that it will show you about leading life according to true principles….I pray you will carefully read this articulation of true love and find great inspiration.”

Since then, the True Mother, Mrs. Moon, updated the Family Pledge in February 2013 to include the term “Heavenly parent” for “God.”

Revised editions of Cheon Seong Gyeong and Peace Messages (Pyeong Hwa Gyeong) were published in 2014. A third volume, Cham Bumo Gyeong details True Parents’ (Rev. and Mrs. Moon) life course in their own words and completes a three volume set known as The Holy Scripture of Cheon Il Guk.

The following list includes links to the texts as they were available when Rev. Moon gave the above-mentioned speech and where they can be found in current publications.

Sermons of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon & Autobiography

Footnote: The links in the speech excerpt above go to texts as they were available at the time of Rev. Moon’s 2010 speech. They provide context. Published texts were often transcriptions from contemporaneous translations that were provided for church members’ spiritual guidance and learning, rather than public outreach.

They are not necessarily accurate translations. Rev. Moon usually spoke extemporaneously in Korean or Japanese with a contemporaneous English translation. The English translations would be translated into many languages, including Japanese and Korean, rather than using audio/visual recordings that were available at the time. There was a rush to get the words into print as young, enthusiastic followers around the world eagerly anticipated his latest sermons in the mail (before the internet).

A 2008 journal article by Dr Andrew Wilson, Professor of Scriptural Studies at Unification Theological Seminary (NY, USA),  entitled “The Need for a Critical Edition of Reverend Moon’s Words” (accessed 2020/5/22),  addresses concerns about the translation of Rev Moon’s sermons.

Many thanks to Gary Fleisher (tparents.org), Damian Anderson (unification.net) and Michael O’Shea (tongil.org) for providing impressive online libraries from which these materials are sourced.

A very fine collection of texts and other historic materials is also being curated at the SunHak Institute of History USA.
